چکیده

More often than not, users appear to use groupware in another way than the groupware designers intended or IT departments expected. Users tend to 're-invent' the technology by developing novel uses, giving rise to what we call ‘the evolving use of technology’. This innovative use of groupware in time leads to changed and changing work processes and individual working practices change (Hettinga 2002; Pipek and Wulf 1999; Karsten and Jones 1998; Ngwenyama 1998; Bikson and Eveland 1996; Orlikowski, 1996b; Rogers 1994).

An evolutionary approach to groupware implementation: the context of requirements engineering in the socio-technical frame

Organizational implementation of new technology brings about design challenges as issues of requirements mismatch and evolving requirements emerge. For groupware systems, these issues are much more problematic as processes surrounding the performance of collaborative work are dynamic, unpredictable, hard to capture and difficult to specify in advance. Requirements for groupware systems are best...

Evolving Cooperation when Introducing Groupware: A Self-Organization Perspective

The introduction of groupware into organizations impacts the existing patterns of cooperation. Applying the theory of self-organizing social systems, we try to gain insights into these introduction processes. We look at Maturana’s theory of autopoietic systems and show how Luhmann has drawn on it for the analysis of social systems. In the following, we present case studies of evolving cooperati...

Designing Tailorable Groupware for the Healthcare Domain

In this paper we present a theory-based approach to designing tailorable groupware for the healthcare domain. Both literature and empirical data show the need, and difficulty, of designing groupware that is adaptable to match the dynamic requirements of real-life co-operation in telemedicine. We apply an existing social theory, the Information Foraging Theory, to explain natural tailoring behav...

A Component-Based Groupware Development Methodology

Software development in general and groupware applications in particular can greatly benefit from the reusability and interoperability aspects associated with software components. Component-based software development enables the construction of software artefacts by assembling prefabricated, configurable and independently evolving building blocks, called software components. This paper presents...
